The most popular trail in Cloudcroft! This beautiful loop winds through a fir forest with stunning views of White Sands from the western rim. The trail showcases the famous Osha plant found throughout the Sacramento Mountains. The first 3/4 mile is rocky, so wear good footwear.
Walk in the footsteps of history along the former Cloud-Climbing Railroad route. The trail leads to the stunning Mexican Canyon Trestle, built in 1899 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This 323-foot curved trestle rises 52 feet above the canyon floor. First half-mile is paved; panoramic views of White Sands and San Andreas Mountains.
New Mexico's first designated National Recreation Trail! This epic route traverses stunning ponderosa pine forests, fir trees, and quaking aspen groves at elevations near 9,000 feet. Walk on a blend of old Indian paths, railroad grades, homestead trails, and logging routes. Section 1 (11 mi) to Karr Canyon Rd; Section 2 (9.9 mi) to Sunspot Hwy; Section 3 to Sacramento River Rd.
A lovely waterfall tucked along the Sunspot Scenic Byway. Water cascades over a bluff adorned with ferns, mosses, and algae-covered stones beneath tall spruce and fir trees. A short trail leads to the top of the waterfall. The area serves as a jump-off point for longer trails ranging from 1.5-mile loops to 12-mile treks. Basic picnic facilities available.
A challenging backcountry adventure offering diverse terrainβforest, meadows, and a small waterfall. Popular for birding, hiking, and trail running. The trail is about 90% rocky terrain, so sturdy boots are essential. Best visited April through October. Perfect for experienced hikers seeking solitude and natural beauty.
The most popular camping trail in the Cloudcroft area with abundant wildlife. Elk and deer are frequently spotted along the trail. The route passes through beautiful pine forest and offers excellent opportunities for overnight backpacking. A favorite among locals for its natural beauty and wildlife viewing.
